The first bass boat made by Skeeter® was produced by Holmes Thurmond in 1948, just after World War II. Thurman started his enterprise in Shreveport, Louisiana, and Skeeter became a leading boat manufacturer in the south over the next decade. The company name comes from the fact that the initial flat-bottom wooden boats had long, needle-like noses that resembled a mosquito’s proboscis.

The company continued to expand and develop over the next few decades, moving again to Kilgore, Texas, where its current headquarters is located. More types of boats, including larger 20’ bass boats and saltwater-specific boats, came about during the 1990s. Skeeter celebrated 50 years in business in 1998 and has continued to see success in the new millennium with the addition of digital technology to their crafts as well as more modern boat construction techniques to make their products sturdier.
